Location, Connections and Hotel Information

Passau

Passau is a beautiful Bavarian town located in the center of Europe, at the confluence of the rivers Inn and Danube, at the border to Austria and the Czech Republic. The international gateway most frequently used is Munich airport (2hrs by train), but Passau can also be reached from Linz (1hr), Vienna (3hrs) or Frankfurt airport (5hrs).

Connections

By Road:

From Munich airport to Passau
To go to Passau by car use the autobahn A92 in direction to Landshut/Deggendorf, then change to the autobahn A3 in direction to Passau.

From Frankfurt airport to Passau
Use the autobahn A3 in direction to Würzburg-Nürnberg-Regensburg
Leave autobahn A3, at exit Passau-Süd. Follow Neuburger Straße for 3.5 miles (5 km). At the fifth set of traffic lights turn right onto Leonhard Paminger Straße, and at its end left onto Innstraße. After about half a mile you find building FMI on your right, with a big parking lot in front.
If you follow Neuburger Straße on further, you get to the center of Passau (Exerzierplatz, see city map for details).

By Air and Rail:

The two major airports for travel to Passau are Munich and Frankfurt.
From Munich airport to Passau
There is a bus service (Nr. 635) from Munich airport to the train station of Freising (don't go to Munich!), from where you can take the train to Passau. Trains depart roughly every hour. The trip takes roughly 1.5 hours from Freising to Passau. You can buy a train ticket in the central area of Munich airport, at the "abr" travel agent. The bus ticket can be bought on the bus.

From Frankfurt airport to Passau
From the underground area of the airport (Section A/B/C) use the IC/EC-rail line to Passau. It helps to have an advance seat reservation. Trains depart hourly during mid-day and bi-hourly in the morning and evening. The trip takes roughly 4.5 hours. Tickets can be bought at the DB counter of the airport and are cheaper on the ``rail-and-fly'' plan if you present your flight ticket at the time of purchase.

Train schedules for Germany can be obtained through the Webservice of German Rail DB.

In Passau
You arrive at the train station (Hauptbahnhof, on the upper left of both city maps indicated with a DB sign).
The best way to get around Passau is on foot. You can easily get from the university to any point in town in 20-30 minutes. The most scenic way is along the shore of the river Inn.
Buses in Passau run from about 06:00 to 22:00 every 15 minutes.
